Its primary function is to provide cathodic protection, acting as a sacrificial metal to prevent corrosion on important components such as pipes and heat exchangers.

When not connected to any external circuit, the aluminum anode exhibits an open circuit potential ranging from 1.10 to 1.18 volts relative to the standard calomel electrode (V, SCE). This potential measurement indicates the voltage at which the anode operates in isolation.

Once connected to the cooling system and operating under load, the aluminum anode maintains a work potential ranging from 1.05 to 1.12 volts relative to the standard calomel electrode (V, SCE). This work potential ensures that the anode effectively protects the system against corrosion.

On offshore drilling platforms, there are various mechanical equipment such as generators, frequency converters, air compressors, high-pressure mud pumps, brake pads for thrusters, hydraulic units for thrusters, and centralized cooling systems in ship designs. These equipment generate a significant amount of heat during operation and require cooling. The most readily available cooling medium at sea is seawater, which has almost zero cost. Therefore, many mechanical equipment on offshore platforms utilize seawater as a cooling medium for heat exchange to ensure the normal and stable operation of systems and equipment.

Therefore, seawater corrosion is considered cathode-controlled. It is highly corrosive and can lead to equipment corrosion. To protect the seawater cooling system, sacrificial aluminum alloy anodes are used.
